New Salem, Witch Island
Aspect: All is normal, all is well.
At the foot of the Heights, near the center of the town proper is one of the oldest buildings on the Island: The City Hall. Its original colonial design has been preserved in spirit but but refitted in modern materials for all the necessities of a information age civil office, including a surprisingly sophisticated security system.
In here, the business of running the town is done on many levels. All the administration and management of a modern American township occurs. But one room, warded by spells hidden in the floor mosaic, is where Mayor Barnabas Grey and other humans that know of Witch-kind (and are allowed to live) report to the Chamber of Commerce and individual Elders as needed.
The foundation of the building is a single huge, flat slab of granite discovered as is in this location more than two hundred years ago. Reached by a back room on the first floor, an ornate staircase is carved into that foundation rock, leading more than thirty feet down to the Archive. Ceiling tiles mask wiring for the lights and oaken panels define rooms and hide the hewn walls. Only the granite floor (though perfectly flat and mirror polished) reminds anyone that this is essentially an enormous cave. Here rests the town records: land purchases, contracts, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, genealogies. Everything ever committed to record for the past two and a half centuries (possibly longer). Of course, access is strictly regulated.
